Grading, inspection and testing
How we grade each product, what we inspect and test before loading, and the documents you can ask for.
How we grade
Every product is graded before it is packed. The grade names below describe what we sort by. Your order confirms the grade and the limits that apply to your shipment.
Colour, size and purity
Pink salt is sorted by crystal colour (light pink to deep pink), then sieved to fine, medium, coarse or lump size. Black salt and industrial salt are graded by grain size and cleanliness.
Grain length and broken grain
Rice is graded by average grain length, the share of broken grain, colour and moisture. Sella, steamed and parboiled rice are graded separately from raw white rice.
Size, colour and purity
Sesame, chickpeas, lentils and mung beans are machine-cleaned, then graded by size and colour, and checked for foreign matter, damaged and split grain.
Four inspection points
Incoming material
Each lot is checked by eye and by sample when it arrives from the mine, mill or farm. Lots that do not match the grade are set aside.
During processing
Samples are taken while the product is being washed, milled, sieved or sorted, to confirm size and colour stay within the grade.
Before packing
The finished product is checked for cleanliness and foreign matter, and moisture is measured where it matters.
Before loading
Pack weight, labels and seals are checked, and a retained sample is kept from the shipment.
